Happy Independence Day, South Korea!

August 15th is the day that South Korea celebrates its independence! IHM Sisters Cecilia Yeon Tji and Angela Kim share with us their cultural pride and their hopes and dreams for the people of South Korea.

Sister Angela Kim, IHM:
South Korean culture is deeply rooted in Confucian principles of respect for elders, family, friendship, ancestors and tradition. On 2020 Independence Day of the Republic of Korea, I dream that everyone will have an equal standing in society: access to education, employment, housing, health care and social welfare programs.

Sister Cecilia Yeon Tji, IHM:
It has taken the people of Korea 5000 years to become who they are. After World War II brought independence from Japan, I saw and experienced Korea’s struggles and turmoil. Since the Korean War (1950), South Korea has become an independent and economically prosperous nation: Samsung, LG, Kia, Hyundai, K-pop and an academy award in the arts! I am very proud of South Korea’s culture and achievements.

“Freedom with responsibility” has helped South Korea be one of the leading countries to address the Covid-19 pandemic! Collaboration with
the global community is the fuel of the future, and the way to keep South Korea alive is to keep God in our lives.
